Travelers looking to get out of South Dakota's frigid temperatures escaped to warmer climates in record numbers last month.
The Sioux Falls airport is reporting record passengers boardings for March at 44,646. Airport Executive Director Dan Letellier tells KELOLAND News it was the busiest March ever. And while July is typically the busiest month, it also beat last July's number of 44,400 passengers.
Allegiant gained 1/3 of the market with daily flights to Las Vegas and Phoenix. It also had three flights a week to Orlando and added the Tampa/St. Petersburg service this year.
The boardings for March were 1.5 percent higher than last year at the same time. The Sioux Falls airport expects to hit its millionth passenger by the end of the year.
