Severe Weather Passes Through But Spares Some Communities

June 16, 2014, 10:00 PM by Erich Schaffhauser

Severe Weather Passes Through But Spares Some Communities
HOWARD, SD -

As severe weather passed through KELOLAND Monday, residents of some communities were thankful to come away with less damage than they expected.

Gary Stangohr lives south of Howard. As a farmer he feared he’d be surveying a big mess as rain, hail and wind moved his direction early Monday afternoon.

"I was really worried about the hail because it had that blue/green color right before if started here; usually that's not a good sign," Stangohr said.

Once the storm arrived, he was thankful the hail was small and didn't last long at his farm. The wind was also short-lived.

"It got pretty windy right at first but then it let up right away and then it just rained after that," Stangohr said.

He heard of some people living east of him who suffered tree damage, but hadn't come across damage on his property Monday. He still needed to look at some of his fields, but says crops close to his farm look good.

The nearly two inches of rain Stangohr found in his rain gauge Monday added to moisture the area had already recently received.

"We're getting to the point now where it's almost getting too wet, too much of a good thing, but it's better than dry," Stangohr said.

And better than larger hail tossed around by strong winds, Stangohr says, which he wouldn't have been surprised to see.
