Seven Sioux Falls Murders Remain Unsolved
September 24, 1999, 12:00 AM
You can divide the number of unsolved killings in Sioux Falls into two groups...those where there's not enough evidence to charge the suspect and those where in a trial, the suspect has been found "not guilty" of murder.
A jury decided day care owner Lee Ann Sievert was "not guilty" of shaking little baby Carley Little Thunder to death. That verdict put Little Thunder on a elite list. A Sioux Falls victim without a convicted killer.
Szchawan restaurant owner Yuy Kong Chhen, shot outside his business is on the list too. His alleged murderer was also found not guilty.
So was the man accused of killing Axel Christensen, in 1984. Christian was found shot to death in his basement.
Clara Olsen, an elderly woman found murdered in bed is on another list of the unsolved. Those where police identified a suspect, but don't have enough evidence to make an arrest. There was also no arrest in the case of the baby girl found abandoned in Sioux Falls in the early 70's. Not enough evidence.
And that's also why police say there are no charges in the most recent unsolved murder. They say they know who killed Pam Halverson in August and put her body in the back seat of her car.
It's those kinds of cases, Captain Bill Hoier says are the hardest. "It's particularly frustrating when they develop a suspect and they just can't get to the point of somebody being charged."
As Sioux Falls continues to grow, so does the pool of potential suspects. But police say killers have one thing in common. 99-percent knew their victims.
"It may take hours, it may take days and it may take months or years. But something is going to happen at some point in time. It's going to come to a conclusion."
When detectives get frustrated, Captain Hoier brings up Larisa Dumansky, the Sioux Falls mother who disappeared after the night shift at John Morrell. Three years after she died, Robert Leroy Anderson was arrested for Dumansky's murder. He's also convicted of killing Piper Streyle.
