It can easily be called the ‘Top Chef’ of Sioux Falls.
But, minus the microphones and cameras, seven local chefs competed in ‘Cooking for a Cure’ at the Sioux Falls Sam’s Club on Sunday.
Sam’s Club marketing coordinator Anne Palmer said for ten dollars anyone can come and eat the food with all proceeds going to Children’s Miracle Network.
And, eaters had a lot to choose from.
Chef Vikish Patel cooked up an Asian barbeque.
“I marinated the pork for two days,” Patel said. “Instead of a tomato based barbeque sauce, we used dates. It’s something a little different.”
Rocco’s Catering chef Matt Sapari stuck with a more traditional barbeque, cooking up a barbeque pork and steakhouse potato salad. Sapari said he spent about eight to ten hours marinating his pork to perfection.
Meanwhile, chef Jessica Safstrom created a Guatemalan dish and she says Guatemalan food isn’t what most people think.
“Most people think it’s spicy, but it’s not. It’s just yummy,” Safstrom said.
And, if her dish is a success today, she says she’ll consider adding it to her menu when she opens up a food truck in Sioux Falls next month.
Palmer says all of the eaters get to vote for the favorite chef.
“It’s a little surprise to the chefs, but the winner gets a special goody bag,” Palmer said.
Despite the competition, all of the chefs are here for another reason.
“To help the children that are in the hospital and then also the families that have to go for their kids,” Palmer said.
Palmer says her team will look at expanding this event in the future.
