Sen. John Kerry shares some things in common with ex-U.S. Sen. George McGovern: Both lost presidential bids, both were longtime Democratic senators and both were decorated as war heroes.
In the wake of McGovern's Sunday passing, Kerry says McGovern was a "voice of clarity and conviction at a time when America needed it most."
He says McGovern lived a remarkable life with humility, never boasting about his own heroism as a decorated bomber pilot, even when it might have helped him in the 1972 presidential election.
Instead, McGovern lost that race in a historic landslide to Richard Nixon, who soon after resigned amid the Watergate scandal.
Kerry says: "George McGovern may not have been president, but George McGovern was right."
