Semi Truck Drivers Talk Varying Road Conditions

Semi Truck Drivers Talk Varying Road Conditions
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Drivers dealt with all kinds of elements Monday. From heavy snow in the northeast to the heavy fog that lasted all day in the southeast, there are plenty of potential road hazards across all corners of the state. And as the temperatures dipped, icy roads became the norm.

“You definitely slow down. If it's ice you can't drive on it. You just get off the road. Snow, you're putting along about 30 to 35 miles per hour. Depends on how bad it is," Duff Bishop said, when asked how he handled the varying road conditions.

Bishop wasn’t sticking around long. Like so many truckers along Interstate 29, Sioux Falls was just a pit-stop for him.

“I'm going to go south as far as I can,” Mike Sims said, who hit ice while traveling through parts of southern Minnesota. “The more you get this way the better it gets.”

“There’s a little bit of snow, little bit of rain, little bit of ice coming down,” Sheila Saunders said.

Saunders traveled Interstate 29 all the way from Fargo, North Dakota.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation’s Safe Travel USA website said roads were either wet, icy or snow packed or a combination of the three across most of the state.

“I'm no slowpoke. If the roads are good I'll leave the foot down and be doing 70 miles an hour. But if it's a snowstorm usually everybody else is passing me,” Bishop said.

“You slow down, keep your distance away from everybody else, and hope everybody else stays away from you,” Sims said.
