Used smartphones are a hot commodity right now and thieves are doing anything they can to get their hands on them.
The owner of Next 2 New Wireless learned that Friday morning when his manager went to open the 41st Street store and found that it had been burglarized. But the burglar didn't get away with much.
Sioux Falls Police were examining the freshly fallen snow outside Next 2 New Wireless after a burglar left some fresh clues following an early morning break in.
"He left a ton of foot prints all over and in the video, we got a pretty good look at his sneakers and he's got a pretty unique pair of sneakers on there," Next 2 New Wireless owner Will Wheeler said.
At around 4:30 Friday morning, Wheeler says the criminal broke in looking for smart phones. He used a pry bar left near the front door to break in. Once inside, he was caught on camera looking through the merchandise. He didn't get away with much.
"We take almost all the phones off site every night just in case somebody does come in and decide to do a little midnight shopping, there's nothing really here for them to take," Wheeler said.
The store has been broken into before and Wheeler knows that the used smart phone market is hot; it's why employees take precautions like leaving the lights on in the store for better surveillance footage.
"So, everyone has one. They're really cool; they're really flashy. Your life runs through these things and everyone wants them," Wheeler said.
Wheeler says the burglar made off with a few prepaid phones, some iPhone parts and the tip jar on the counter. All in all, he didn't make off with much but it's what he left behind that is almost more important.
"We're on to this guy and he really didn't get much to make it worth his while, so it's just not worth it," Wheeler said.
