SDSU To Build Student-Athlete Development Center

November 14, 2007, 4:58 PM

SDSU To Build Student-Athlete Development Center
Avera's $15 million gift to SDSU comes as the university is preparing to kick off a fundraising campaign. And an alum is giving the first donation. SDSU president David Chicoine confirms Dana Dykhouse, President and CEO of First Premier Bank, will donate several million dollars.

As SDSU continues it's Division One transition, the university must continue to find ways to grow athletically, and academically. And it appears the Jacks are about to take another significant step forward.

SDSU President Dave Chicoine says, "It'll be another great opportunity for our student athletes."

With that brief statement, SDSU President Dave Chicoine quickly sums up the benefits of a new Student-Athlete Development Center in Brookings.

"We'll be able to bring together, into that proposed facility, all of support infrastructure that's now scattered into many different facilities across our campus," says Chicoine. "And, importantly, it allows us to consolidate our academic support and tutoring services for our student athletes into one, best of class, facility."

The building will be located at the North end of Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, giving SDSU athletics a more centralized location, and affording countless opportunities.

"That's the place where our athletic facilities are coming into the modern era," adds Chicoine. "It'll provide both women and men team sports with training, and rehab, and sports medicine opportunities. And that will also link us back into our academic programs in sports medicine and athletic training."

Chicoine says this type of facility is relatively common amongst Division One institutions, which is exactly why SDSU needs to follow suit.

Chicoine explains, "As we move forward in our athletic program we have to assure that we have comparable facilities that institutions that we are going to be competing with, and want to be like, have."

SDSU will officially announce Dykhouse's lead donation, and kickoff its fundraising campaign in an event scheduled for this Saturday morning.
