SDSMT President Robert Wharton Dies
Robert Wharton

RAPID CITY, SD -

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology President Robert Wharton has passed away.

The school made the announcement Wednesday morning after the Executive Council learned of his death.  No cause of death was given.

A statement on the school's website says people are shocked and saddened by the news.  Flags on campus are being lowered to half-staff.

Wharton was diagnosed with neck cancer late last year. He went through seven weeks of radiation and chemotherapy treatments at a Rapid City cancer center. He issued a statement last April saying the treatments succeeded and he was cancer-free.

Wharton, who started at SDSMT in 2008, was the school's 18th president.  The South Dakota Board of Regents says Mines Provost Duane Hrncir has been designated as Acting President.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
