SD Spring Wheat Crop Estimate Up 13 Percent
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is expecting a South Dakota spring wheat crop that's seven percent larger than last year.

The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service says the state's crop is forecast at 54.6 million bushels with an average yield of 43 bushels per acre, down one bushel from 2013. Acres intended for harvest, at 1.27 million, are up 9 percent from last year.

Winter wheat production is forecast at 53.8 million bushels. That's a ten percent increase from the June 1 forecast, but a 106 percent jump from last year. Average yield is forecast at 46 bushels per acre, up seven bushels from last year.

Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 1.17 million acres, up 75 percent from last year.
