SD Senate: Local Governments Can't Ban Dog Breeds

SD Senate: Local Governments Can't Ban Dog Breeds
PIERRE, SD -

A bill that would forbid local governments from banning specific breeds of dogs has passed the South Dakota Senate by a narrow margin.

Senators voted 19-16 on Tuesday to advance the measure to the state's House.

Supporters argue that the breed of a dog does not indicate its risk to public safety. They also say the bill protects people's property rights.

Opponents say the state should not interfere with local government decisions. Some senators question whether there is some temperament variance among breeds of dogs.

Aberdeen's city council has tried and failed to ban pit bulls.
