SD Senate Kills Deadwood 24-Hour Alcohol Sale Bill

SD Senate Kills Deadwood 24-Hour Alcohol Sale Bill
PIERRE, SD -

The South Dakota Senate has killed a measure that would have allowed hotel bars in the Black Hills gambling town of Deadwood to serve alcohol 24 hours a day.

The bill would have allowed Deadwood bars in hotels with at least 10 rooms to serve liquor around the clock. State law restricts liquor sales to between 7 a.m. and 2 a.m., or 19 hours a day.

Supporters say the measure would have helped Deadwood attract more conventions and promote itself as a tourist destination.

Opponents argue it would have promoted more drunken driving in the Deadwood area. They also contend it would have set a precedent and encouraged establishments in other cities to seek permission to serve drinks around the clock.

Senators defeated the bill on a vote of 15-20.
