SD School Sentinel Law Begins Monday

SD School Sentinel Law Begins Monday
PIERRE, SD -

Starting Monday, South Dakota school districts can arm teachers and staff with guns under a new state law.

However, officials say they haven't heard of any districts taking formal steps to beef up security with school sentinels.

The bill's main sponsor, Rapid City Representative Scott Craig, says some districts are considering arming people, but school boards will likely move slowly in deciding whether to take part.

It's unknown which districts in the state are considering arming teachers.

Craig says the threat of armed people will deter attacks on schools.

But opponents say the program could lead to accidental shootings.
