The South Dakota Transportation Department has started the planning process to replace the highway bridge over the Missouri River between Pierre and Fort Pierre.
The department is searching for an engineering consultant to determine the location and kind of structure that will eventually replace the current bridge. The study also will involve completing the environmental process required before a new bridge is designed.
The bridge construction project is expected to be completed sometime after 2020.
The bridge carries traffic on U.S. Highway 14, U.S. Highway 83 and state Highway 34.
