Some of the best track and field athletes in the Midwest have taken over Howard Wood Field for the 89th Dakota Relays. At the same time, South Dakota athletic officials are looking for help in figuring out where future state tournaments should be held.
"Obviously, wrestling, my favorite is Aberdeen just because they put on a good show and treat you right. For track, it's only been at Rapid or Sioux Falls, so it is what it is," Tabor parent Gary Kortan said.
The online survey from the South Dakota High School Activities Association came out this week, asking parents what they like to see out of a state tournament city.
"I like to see where the city is because of the types of restaurants and hotels and things like that are important," Sioux Falls parent Sean Ervin said.
Other factors are being weighed as well, including distance from home. These parents don't seem to mind the drive.
"If you're from South Dakota, you're used to driving long distances and whether it's in Rapid City, Aberdeen or Sioux Falls, it doesn't matter to us," Kortan said.
"It can be a little bit of a hassle to drive a ways, but it's always about the athletes and especially if it's your kids, we'll travel as much as we need to," Ervin said.
Even though parents take many factors into consideration for good state tournament cities, it's the actual venue that makes the most difference.
"More important is the venue, the place the actual event is happening. That's why I love Howard Wood Field for track," Ervin said.
"We're just interested in a good venue for the competition and good places to view it. That's all we need," Kortan said.
You can take the survey until May 30th. The survey can be found on the SDHSAA website.
