South Dakota law enforcement agencies are searching the Salem area for two men who fled on foot after a vehicle pursuit that led to a crash.
Officials say the incident began early Saturday after a Highway Patrol trooper tried to stop a van for speeding on U.S. Highway 81 south of Salem. The van did not stop, turned around and headed back toward the trooper's vehicle. The trooper reported he saw what he believed was a gun in the passenger's hand, and heard a shot.
The Highway Patrol says the van turned onto a gravel road, where it went out of control and rolled. When officers approached the van, it was empty.
Officials say the van was stolen. They are cautioning area residents to lock their homes and vehicles.
