A South Dakota Army National Guard soldier is safe tonight after an active shooter killed three people today at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.
A guard spokesman says the South Dakota guardsman is there providing training, but was nowhere near the shooting today and is fine. The gunman is dead and 14 people are also hurt in the incident at a medical center on the base.
President Barack Obama has issued a statement saying the country is heartbroken over the shooting.
Fort Hood was the scene of a mass shooting in 2009 when 13 people were killed and more than 30 wounded.
