A Columbia man accused of failing to properly check muskrat traps has been given a six-month suspended jail sentence.
Fifty-eight-year-old Kerry L. Hansen pleaded guilty to six counts of failing to properly check traps. In exchange, 68 other counts of failure to properly check traps and two counts of trapping muskrats out of season were dismissed.
Hansen received a 30-day suspended jail term on each of the six charges that stem from incidents in 2011 and 2012. He must pay nearly $3,800 in fines and fees and spend six months on probation.
State law requires trappers to check their traps at least every two days to ensure that trapped animals aren't suffering and that the equipment is working properly.
