A jury has convicted a man of sexually abusing a girl at a home day care run by his wife in Cavour.
Jurors on Wednesday deliberated nearly seven hours before finding 52-year-old Fred Sylaart guilty of sexual contact with a child under 16. He is to be sentenced Oct. 23.
Defense attorney David Wheeler told jurors in his closing argument that evidence in the case was lacking. Prosecutor Dawn Elshire acknowledged that there was no DNA evidence but said the victim had no reason to lie.
Sylaart's 18-year-old son, Jordan, was sentenced in the case in May to about three months in jail and three years of probation. He pleaded guilty in a deal with prosecutors.
