SD Legislature Considers Extra School Funding

SD Legislature Considers Extra School Funding
PIERRE, SD -

South Dakota educators still hope state lawmakers will provide school districts with extra money to help them recover from budget cuts imposed three years ago.

But some legislative leaders say tax revenues might not climb enough to permit that additional spending.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard's proposed budget would increase state aid to school districts by 3 percent next year, nearly double the inflationary increase required by law.

Representatives of school boards, administrators and teachers are asking the Legislature for a 3.8 percent increase. That would put per-student spending back where it was before budget cuts made in 2011.

Wade Pogany of the Associated School Boards of South Dakota says education groups hope lawmakers will approve a 3.8 percent boost in state aid when they pass a state budget.
