A South Dakota Army National Guard unit based in Rapid City has returned from a yearlong deployment to Iraq and Kuwait.
Sixty-seven soldiers from the 1st Battalion of the 189th Aviation Regiment returned home Saturday.
Hundreds of family and community members turned out to greet the returning soldiers. Gov. Dennis Daugaard, Sen. John Thune, Rep. Kristi Noem and Rapid City Mayor Sam Kooiker also welcomed the soldiers back.
The battalion is a medical evacuation support group equipped with eight UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters. The unit includes pilots, flight medics, crew chiefs and flight operations specialists.
