SD Governor Signs New Laws; One Alters Place Names
PIERRE, SD -

South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has recently signed 17 bills into law.

One law allows for the use of the word "Negro" in the names of buttes, creeks and other places. This law disallows the use of the term squaw. Squaw has already been removed and replaced from most of the names of state geographic features.

The state initially planned to replace the word "Negro". African American leaders protested and asked to keep the names intact to reflect their legacy in the state.

This statute had the unanimous support of the Legislature. The state has been working on these name changes for more than 10 years.

Another new law allows for the use of crossbows for big game hunting during firearm season. The Legislature also unanimously endorsed this provision.
