After firefighters blamed an abandoned campfire for a blaze in the Black Hills, visitors and residents are hearing a familiar warning: Completely extinguish campfires.
Even though South Dakota saw some rain over the weekend, officials say the potential for wildfires remains high, especially in the Black Hills and surrounding areas. The campfire-sparked blaze consumed less than an acre, but some South Dakota fires in recent weeks have surpassed 15 square miles. Some were sparked by lightning and fueled by the recent drought.
Officials say the 475-acre West Nike Fire has been fully contained. It's believed to have been started accidentally by someone near Haines Avenue and Mall Drive.
Another small fire south of Dark Canyon is under investigation by the Rapid City Fire Department.
