Want to know when a South Dakota inmate is going to get out of prison?
A new database from the South Dakota Department of Corrections gives you more access than ever before.
Much like the South Dakota Sex Offender Registry this new feature on the Department of Corrections website lets you look up any inmate that is currently in prison and see how long their sentence is, what they are in for, and when they could be released.
"We think it's going to be a valuable service to the community and especially victims," Michael Winder with the South Dakota Department of Corrections said Thursday.
The new DOC Offender Locator was launched Thursday. It allows users to type in the name of an inmate who is in custody and find out information about their status.
For instance you can see that former state lawmaker and convicted rapist Ted Klaudt is currently serving his prison term at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield, South Dakota. The 469 pound inmate will be eligible for parole for the first time in 2041.
"I think it will be convenient for users to be able to go online and search when they want to and not just when one of our records offices is open that can assist them," Winder said.
The DOC also believes it will be valuable information for victims and the public.
In February of 2012 authorities alerted the public about the release of convicted rapist Ed Morris because he had completed his sentence and officials feared he could reoffend. He was eventually arrested again for not registering as a sex offender. The new DOC Offender Locator says Morris will be eligible for parole in August.
"This is another way to share the information that's considered public information in state law and we do think this is going to be a valuable tool especially for victims," Winder said.
The one thing the offender locator does not have is pictures of the inmates currently in prison. The DOC says they will be releasing photos of inmates on a 'case by case' basis.
