The South Dakota Department of Revenue is asking the public to watch out for a scam that involves people being asked to pay a penalty for property tax or income tax due.
Several people have received emails with the subject line “Payment notification” along with a claim number. The email states it is demanding payment for a penalty for tax due.
Other emails say that property tax is the subject of the penalty.
Department of Revenue Secretary Andy Gerlach says:
- South Dakota does not collect a state income tax
- Property taxes are collected at the county level by the county treasurer, not by the Department of Revenue
If you have received any part the tax scam or any scam, report it immediately to the South Dakota Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Unit at 1-800-300-1986 or email them at email@example.com.
To verify the validity of any notification received from the Department of Revenue, you are asked to call 1-800-829-9188.
