SD Committee Supports Prenatal Care For Immigrants

SD Committee Supports Prenatal Care For Immigrants
PIERRE, SD -

A South Dakota House committee has passed a measure to provide prenatal care to immigrant women who are not citizens.

The Health and Human Services Committee voted 11-1 to support the bill.

Legislators and supporters from medical and religious organizations say the bill will save money and the lives of children. One legislator called it a "pro-life" bill as it offers medical care for unborn children. Children born in the United States are automatically citizens.

Rep. Jenna Haggar, who voted no, argued that it is an expansion of health care to illegal immigrants. Funding for the provision would come from a combination of state and federal dollars.

A similar bill failed to pass last year. One of the bill's sponsors says the governor plans to support the bill.
