A South Dakota legislative panel is looking at a measure that would prohibit abortions sought because a fetus has been diagnosed with Down syndrome.
The bill would make it a misdemeanor for a doctor to perform or attempt an abortion if a woman is seeking to end a pregnancy because the fetus has or may have Down syndrome, a genetic disorder.
The House Health and Human Services Committee planned to hold a hearing on the bill Thursday.
The measure is similar to another bill that passed the House on Wednesday. That other bill would ban abortions sought because of the gender of a fetus.
