Schools With Post Labor Day Calendars Start Classes
ABERDEEN, SD -

Schools that opted for a post Labor Day start began classes Tuesday.

Aberdeen Christian is one of them. Students at that school are back to class a couple of weeks later than their public school friends.

Erich Schaffhauser: What did you do in your last couple weeks of summer that you had off?
Keyli Sawatzky: I went camping.
September Iwerks: I worked a lot.

Aberdeen Christian also started classes after Labor Day last year. Superintendent Eric Kline says he's received positive feedback so far.

Labor Day was very early in September this year; it's a bit later next year. Still, Kline plans a post-holiday start.

"Right now we're planning on continuing that tradition. The way we run our school calendar works well for what we want to do here," Kline said.

It's also something the school advertised to potential families looking to enroll kids.

The school has grown this year. Enrollment was 144 at the end of last year; this year it's up to 170.

Kline says new families have thanked the school for its later start, but none have said they came because of it.

The school recently moved into a new building where it renovated 60,000 square feet. That could have served as a draw. Kline says families also said they want to make it a priority to offer their kids faith-based instruction.

Whatever the reason for the growth, Matti Nehlich is happy to see it.

"I like seeing all the new faces and seeing everyone wanting to be a part of our new school," Nehlich said.
