Schools Try Dodging Construction's Distractions

Schools Try Dodging Construction's Distractions
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The new Susan B. Anthony Elementary and McGovern Middle School have grabbed most of the attention, but construction is taking place at many other schools in Sioux Falls this summer.

This is shaping up to be one of the busiest summers of construction ever for the Sioux Falls School District.  Projects, both large and small, will take place at 18 schools.

They range from new classroom additions, to renovations, to additional security at the high schools.  With all that construction activity, each school is doing its best to work around the distractions.

A jackhammer is carving through the concrete in front of Sioux Falls Washington.  Crews are expanding the main entrance to provide more electronic security in the fall.

"To be able to make sure we're more so in control of who is entering and coming into our building," Washington High School Principal Jamie Nold said.

Even though classes are done for the summer, the school is hosting Driver's Ed students and incoming freshman for orientation. The staff has roped-off the front entrance to make sure no one tries to go through the front doors.

"It does cause some inconveniences, but we've been trying to notify students, parents, others that they're going to have to use the back entrance when they're coming into the building," Nold said.

This is where the Washington High School office is, and just a few feet away, this is where the construction is taking place.  The school staff is going to have to get used to the noise.

"As you're writing, it's kind of zzzzz!  It's just an unusual feeling, but I can still get work done, it's just something that we're not used to," Washington administrative secretary Kellie Crossway said.

Front office workers will be moving farther down the hall to get away from the noise.  They're not letting the vibrations from construction rattle them.

"It's much better than trying to put up with this during the school year," Nold said.

Driver's Ed classes and freshman orientation at Washington are taking place out of earshot of the construction.

The project is expected to be finished by August 1.
