A 37-year-old school teacher and former Canton city councilman faces rape charges.
Jeff Loren Nolte was arrested last month for allegedly raping a young child over a four-year period. Not many details are being released, but we do know that if convicted, Nolte could be going to prison for a long time.
Nolte lives in Canton, but had been teaching math in the Oldham Ramona School District. He had been renting an apartment in Madison while he was teaching.
KELOLAND News has confirmed that Nolte has been placed on long-term leave while the investigation continues.
According to court documents, Nolte was arrested January 9 for allegedly raping an eight-year-old child over a four-year period. He now faces multiple charges.
"Currently, he is facing two charges of rape in the first degree and one count of sexual contact with a minor," Lincoln County State's Attorney Tom Wollman said.
Nolte is no longer in jail after he paid the $75,000 cash-only bond.
But Nolte must live under certain conditions while his case is pending.
"Pursuant to the bond conditions, the defendant is not to have any unsupervised contact with minors. Also he's not have any contact with the victim in this case and he's not to be within 500 feet of the residence here in Canton," Wollman said.
Nolte also served on the Canton City Council for three years between 2008 and 2011.
If convicted, he could serve the rest of his life in prison.
Nolte will be arraigned on the rape charges in Lincoln County March 17.
