School Bus Drivers Needed In Sioux Falls

School Bus Drivers Needed In Sioux Falls

The numbers of students riding buses this year is on the rise, and School Bus Inc. is looking for more drivers to keep up with the need. The charter business is looking to get about 10 more drivers to help bring the estimated 11-thousand students to school.

The fleet of buses are ready to go, but School Bus Inc. is still looking for people to fill the driver's seat.

The business plans on paying $13.25 an hour for the part time job, with a signing bonus of $250, or $500 if you already have your commercial driver's license. If you don't have that license, which is a requirement for the job, School Bus Inc. is willing to pay for the training.

"Usually by the time you get the license and get through training it usually takes a couple weeks. We like to have a new driver ride along with a veteran driver before they get in the bus and drive and kind of get to know how we do things and get comfortable with it," Manager Jim Shafer said.

Drivers are also required to have a body mass index of under 35, or if they are over it, they need to take a sleep apnea test. That test can cost up to $2,500.

With the students from Axtell Park Middle School heading over to McGovern, more than 200 students are riding the bus. With the extra students, School Bus Inc needs the drivers. If it doesn't get the drivers, there is a plan that doesn't mean changing or combining routes.

"All of our full-time staff is required to have a license, so you'll see me out there driving when school starts and come of our mechanics and office staff will be filling those slots we don't have full yet," Shafer said.

Manager Jim Shafer thinks that people are afraid of the responsibility of taking care of the students, and that's what's lead to the shortage of drivers. He hopes that people realize the importance of the job, and that the driver seats are filled.

"It's a civic duty or a community duty to help get the kids to school and if you rode a bus, somebody was out there driving you to school. So we'll take all the help we can get," Shafer said.

Shafer says there are both morning and afternoon shifts available, and there is also after school charter opportunities available as well.

If you are interested in the job, you can visit the School Bus Inc. office at 5100 W 8th St., or visit its website.
