The Scheels IcePlex is nearing completion and this week received a nice boost. Furniture Mart USA committed $250,000 to sponsor the facility's main rink.
With a grand opening set for September 20, things are coming together quickly at the Scheels IcePlex. Boards are going up in the south rink and that's not all.
"Now the glass is going in, so actually it is an ice skating rink officially, other than the ice. So we're getting close," Brian Prisbe said.
Prisbe, IcePlex General Manager, says the glass is much higher quality than Sioux Falls hockey and figure skating fans are used to seeing. Spectators will have great views and from the sounds of it, a lot of action to watch.
"We've been amazed at the amount of ice that's been sold. People thought that three sheets was maybe too much but we've got three sheets hopping from November to February every day of the week and on the weekends from 8 a.m. to 10 o'clock at night. So that's an exciting problem to have," Prisbe said.
Prisbe points to October 1 as a tentative start date for scheduling ice time. While Furniture Mart is putting its name on the main rink and the Stampede Hockey Club on another, there's still one sheet left waiting for a sponsor.
"As a non-profit, it's just another way to create some revenue and help offset the costs of generating a rink and getting the local economy involved in the rink. It's a good opportunity for someone if they're interested in it," Prisbe said.
The IcePlex is currently in talks with potential sponsors about naming the third rink.
