Sandy Snarls Air Travel

October 29, 2012, 5:53 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Sandy Snarls Air Travel
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The so-called "superstorm" known as Hurricane Sandy is slamming the east coast of the country.  While South Dakota won't get hit by the powerful wind and rain, the effects of the storm will likely reach here.  One way is through the national travel snafu.

It's a relatively calm day inside the Sioux Falls Regional Airport.  Calm when you consider thousands of flights around the country have been grounded because of the "superstorm" known as Sandy.

"I guess I doubt that something will happen, but we'll see," Trevor Johnson said.

Johnson is part of a group about to embark on an international trip, but their first stop is Chicago.  They admit to not being the most experienced travelers, but remain confident that they'll have no problems on the ground or in the air.

"We're headed over to Italy so hopefully our flight doesn't get canceled or anything.  I doubt it will, but you know, it could happen," Johnson said.

Jon Cole has a similar confidence.  The business traveler is leaving Sioux Falls for Nashville, Tennessee.  He thinks he'll get there, but has worries about a trip to Detroit on Tuesday.

"That I'm feeling less confident about.  We'll see what happens tomorrow and watch what the airlines say and what they're doing.  They're saying wind and rain, but we'll see where it goes," Cole said.

Even experienced travelers will admit there's very little preparing you can do to be stranded in an airport; instead, it's better to just roll with the punches.

"Whatever you have, you have and you just deal with it.  You got all your essentials, your shaving kit and stuff like that, so you just roll with it if it happens," Cole said.

And while east coast flights remain log jammed, the possibility of delays and cancellations will linger at airports around the nation.

Thousands of flights are already canceled for Tuesday.  The storm has an international reach and has canceled flights around the world.
