Ron Johnson Remembered

SIOUX FALLS, SD -
South Dakota correctional officer Ron Johnson is being remembered as a father and grandfather who died in the line of duty.
Johnson was killed Tuesday on his 63rd birthday when two South Dakota State Penitentiary inmates tried to escape.
Officials say 48-year-old Rodney Berget and 48-year-old Eric Robert were trying to escape around 11 a.m. Tuesday morning. During the escape they injured one correctional officer and assaulted Johnson. Johnson died shortly before noon Tuesday in a Sioux Falls hospital.
"There wasn't a soul who didn't like my dad," Jesse Johnson, Ron's son, told KELOLAND News.
Johnson had worked at the penitentiary for 23 years. He leaves behind a wife, a son, a daughter and six grandchildren.
"He died in the line of duty and there's honor in that," Johnson's son said.
