HILL CITY, SD -
Authorities now say that a bison killed after eluding law enforcement in western South Dakota was put down by its owner, not by officers.
The animal chased a motorist over the weekend near Hill City and for several hours occupied officers with the Pennington County Sheriff's Office, state Highway Patrol and state Game, Fish and Parks Department.
Sheriff's Lt. Corey Brubakken says the owner shot the bull bison Saturday night. Initial reports were that officers had killed the animal.
