Robo Calls Against Republicans Under Investigation

September 19, 2012, 11:46 AM by Ben Dunsmoor

Robo Calls Against Republicans Under Investigation
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Attorney General Marty Jackley says Secretary of State Jason Gant has asked him to investigate the robo calls that have recently criticized several Republican leaders in the state legislature.

Recent calls identify the group as 'Veterans Against Unethical Politicians.' But several calls in August did not identify the organization that sponsored the attacks.

Most of the calls focus on House Majority Leader David Lust, House Speaker Pro Tempore Brian Gosch and Senate Majority Leader Russell Olson and ask voters to contact them and ask them why they don't support military veterans.

The attacks likely stem from Senate Bill 188 which failed in the 2011 South Dakota Legislative Session even though it was a bill supported by many Republicans. The bill would have eliminated tuition reimbursement for military veterans in graduate-level college classes in South Dakota in order to provide more money for the tuition reimbursement program for veterans who wanted to take undergraduate courses. Legislators were seeing more demand for the undergraduate programs and less demand for graduate programs. The latest call says that Olson, 'doesn't support the National Guard and believes you are a terrorist.'

The calls appear to be from within the Republican Party because one call says, 'Let's restore conservative ideas and replace these RINOs. (Republicans In Name Only)"

Jackley says he will investigate whether the campaigns are complying with financial and identity disclosures required by law.

A private attorney also tells KELOLAND News he plans to file a lawsuit on behalf of some of the lawmakers this week to find out who is behind the attacks.

KELOLAND News will talk with that attorney later today about these phone calls that many South Dakota voters are receiving.
