Robbery Suspect Shoots At Clerk

December 6, 2013, 4:52 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Robbery Suspect Shoots At Clerk
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Sioux Falls police are looking for two armed robbers, one of whom took the crime to the next level. After grabbing the cash, one of the men took aim and shot at a 62-year-old woman.

Police rushed to the Cubby's Store on the corner of 49th Street and Western Avenue just after one in the morning. Surveillance pictures show two men robbing a clerk at gunpoint. Police say as the robbers left, the man wearing the hooded sweatshirt turned around and fired his gun at the clerk.

"It's serious enough anytime we have a robbery. It bumps it up when we have a weapon that's involved. It takes it to a higher level when somebody is actually shooting that gun at another person," Sam Clemens said.

Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens says the clerk appears to have done everything right. Police suggest following the demands of robbers, even if it means handing over cash.

"There's not one magic thing that people can do to protect themselves from being a victim of crime. It's unfortunate but the things we do, the steps we take, are all designed to try to limit that," Clemens said.

Detectives are now looking for any additional surveillance video that may have captured a vehicle used by the suspects. Because a gun was fired, the suspects could eventually face more than robbery charges. Right now, officers say their focus is on finding the two men.

"I think it is a pretty brazen act any time you go into a store, commit a robbery and the clerk is completely compliant and you still decide to fire. I guess that's one of the questions why, and we don't have the answer at this point," Clemens said.

If you have any information, police ask you to contact them and help them answer that question.

Other businesses in that area of town have been burglarized in recent months, but police don't believe this robbery and those other crimes are connected.

Descriptions from Sioux Falls Police:

Suspect one is a black male, 5’8”-5’10” tall with a slender build. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, red bandana over his face, black and white shoes, blue and tan gloves, and armed with a black semi auto handgun.

Suspect two is a black male, 5’8”-5’10” with a stocky build. He was wearing a red Columbia-style coat with black shoulders. The coat did not have a hood. This suspect had a red bandana over the top of his head and a second red bandana covering his face. He was also wearing all black shoes and was armed with a black and silver handgun.
