Commuters in Sioux Falls can expect delays tomorrow morning on their way to work. The city will begin major roadwork on Russell Street, 12th Street and the intersection of 10th and Sycamore.
The city's mayor is urging drivers to give themselves more time to get to work, but the roadwork is also causing headaches with one area business.
The traffic flows smoothly at the 10th and Sycamore intersection today. Starting tomorrow, that won't be the case. Right turn lanes and two left turn lanes will be added to the intersection. Jim Johnson is a manager at O'Reilly Auto Parts, and he says the timing of the construction isn't ideal for his business.
"It's the worse time. It's coming into the summer months when we really are our busiest. It's when most of the do it yourselfers can actually get out and change their own oil or do stuff to their car that they normally wouldn't do in the wintertime," Jim Johnson said.
Johnson says that other businesses around the intersection might not suffer because they have multiple entrances. O'Reilly has just one entrance on Arrowhead Parkway.
"Having one lane going each direction in front of my business, it's going to be tough for people to get in and out of here," Johnson said.
Johnson hopes that the consistent group of customers will keep coming to the store, even after construction begins.
"Hopefully they keep coming back because we have built a pretty good base of customers here, and hopefully they stay loyal and just take the time to get in and out of the building," Johnson said.
While he says it may hurt his business in the short term, Johnson understands that road construction can help the auto parts store in the long-term.
"Hopefully after all this is all done, it gets even better over here. I know the east side of town is the growing side of town and this is only going to help. So I will just have to suck it up for three months and it'll get better," Johnson said.
The city hopes to have work at the 10th Street and Sycamore intersection completed by October 3rd of this year.
