Revitalizing The Lakota Language Through Dance

July 30, 2012, 12:20 PM

ROSEBUD, SD -

A Rosebud Sioux tribal project that seeks to revitalize the Lakota language isn't focusing on words - it's centered on song and dance.

The tribe's Child Care Service's Song and Dance Project aims to teach families how to make dancing regalia so their kids can take part in the annual wacipi, or pow wow.

Child Care Services Director Gale Spotted Tail says the goal of the three-year-old program is to teach kids to take pride in their Lakota culture and history through dancing. The kids will then want to learn about their culture, including the language.

Hundreds of kids dressed in full regalia are expected to take part in this year's pow wow, scheduled for Aug. 24, 25 and 26 in Rosebud.
