A group of South Dakota residents are working to recognize a World War II flying ace.
Supporters of Cecil Harris are raising funds for a statue of the Cresbard native that would be placed on the Northern State University campus.
Supporters are $17,000 short of their $95,000 goal. An anonymous donor has pledged to give $10,000 after supporters raise $85,000.
Harris was born in Cresbard in 1916. He attended Northern State Teachers College and later enlisted in the U.S. Naval Air Corps. He shot down 24 enemy aircraft during his time serving in the Pacific Theater. He died in 1981.
Aberdeen artist Benjamin Victor is sculpting the statue that is expected to be placed on the northern end of the NSU campus.
