Residents Dispose Of Record-Setting Amount Of Meds

People in central South Dakota have disposed of a record-setting amount of unnecessary medications during an event in Pierre.

Detective Dusty Pelle with the Pierre Police Department says that 79 pounds of old and unneeded drugs were dropped off Saturday during a local "Take Back Day" event.

Pelle says 79 residents dropped off medications. The event was part of a national initiative that allows people to turn in prescription and over-the-counter medications that are no longer used or have expired.

Pelle says this was the department's single largest take-back event. Before Saturday, the department had collected more than 200 pounds of medications during seven events.
