Remembering Woman Killed In House Explosion

August 24, 2010, 5:37 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Remembering Woman Killed In House Explosion
MENNO, SD - The home explosion in Menno has sent shockwaves through the community, especially for the people who knew the victim, 56-year-old Gail Guthmiller.

As investigators continue to sift through the debris at her home, friends and family are piecing together memories of a life that touched many people throughout Menno.

"I think everybody should have a girl like Gail in their town because boy, I tell you, she made a difference," Guthmiller's friend Deb Block said.

Guthmiller worked at the downtown pharmacy, and Tuesday afternoon, Deb Block and Jodi Fisher set up balloons and a make-shift memorial outside the pharmacy because they say Guthmiller always greeted customers there with a smile.

"Everybody just wants to do something but didn't know what, so we thought we'll do this because she worked here and you'd go in there and she always had a smile and know you by name. It just made you feel good," Block said.

"We're hoping more people will bring more stuff out, write a little note, write a card just of what Gail meant to them," Guthmiller's friend Jodi Fischer said.

Because they want the memory of a woman who meant so much to Menno to live on.

"If it would have happened to me, if it would have happened to Deb, Gail would have been right there for us, so we're going to be there for her," Fisher said.

"She did a lot. She did a lot with her family, for friends, everything she'll be so missed," Block said.

People who live in Menno say Guthmiller loved her family and could always be seen around town babysitting her great nieces and nephews.
