Relay For Life

July 24, 2014, 6:17 PM by Brittany Larson

Relay For Life

Thousands turn out every year to show their support for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

It's a chance for people to show their support and honor cancer survivors, while raising money to end the fight.

"The prognosis isn't good but however long I have, I'm going to fight it," Cancer Survivor, Susan Hill said.

It has been a long road to recovery for cancer survivor, Susan Hill.

"There are a few dark days in there and they come back once in a while but you just have to pull yourself up by the boot straps and keep your chin up and keep moving forward," Hill said.

Susan has kept that momentum going seven years after being diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. Since she's gone through chemo, radiation only to see her cancer reappear.

"I was fine for five years but at my five year check-up it's not in my lungs, liver, adrenal gland and spleen and also my bones," Hill said.

Although the odds are against her, this is a fight she doesn't plan to lose.

“Cancer is not going to win this journey. I'm going to fight it until the end. I'm not going to let it take over me. I have goals, I have dreams and cancer is not going to ruin any of that,” Hill said.

The American Cancer Society is hoping to raise more than $200,000 the event will take place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. So there's plenty of opportunity to come out and help with the fight against cancer.

"We walk all night long because cancer doesn't sleep so we are not going to sleep either," Co-chair for Relay For Life, Judy Donovan said.

A community coming together to walk side by side to get one step closer to a cure.

"A huge, huge tug at you heart to see all the people that come to the event. All the survivors that come and everyone that has been touched by cancer. The whole community comes together as a whole to support this," Donovan said.

“ It just makes me speechless, unbelievable feeling to think that all these people are rallying around this cause that we have. We are relaying to fight cancer and to beat it and we are going to relay until cancer is dead,” Hill said.

A battle to the finish line and a promise of never giving up the fight.

In order to make the event a success, organizers and volunteers have been planning for about a year.

The relay for life for Lincoln and Minnehaha Counties kicks off tomorrow night at 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. At the O'Gorman High School Track.
