Record Start Equal To December 1998

December 3, 2012, 5:30 PM by Scot Mundt

Record Start Equal To December 1998

Golfing isn't how most people expect to spend the first days of December. But, people across KELOLAND enjoyed record heat to near record heat over the weekend.

The last time we started December with record heat was in 1998, when the first three days of the month set records highs of 63 degrees. But the rest of the winter didn't necessarily bring more heat; it brought more snow.

In December 1998, Sioux Falls saw nine inches of snow, but it only melted down to a quarter inch of water. This happened with above average temperatures.

The following January was slightly below average for temps.  In fact, we had a 21 degree below zero low in Sioux Falls.  The snow continued with just under ten inches, equaling about a third of an inch of water.

February 1999 was above average for temperatures and the snow continued with just under eight inches and near a quarter inch of water. While the snow amount was above average, the actual water equivalent was below by an inch.

Considering the ongoing drought, a winter like that will be welcomed by many, even if it means you need to put the golf clubs away for the winter.
