Record Rains Cause Flooding Concern

Record Rains Cause Flooding Concern

While some spots in western South Dakota saw snow on Tuesday, other parts of the state saw more than 24-hours of rain.  Some spots in the east picked up more than three inches of cold rain, delaying the harvest.

In Sioux Falls, the downpour was the heaviest one-day rain since July 2011.  It ranks in the top five October storms for the city, whose records go back more than a century.  Huron came close to the all-time October mark.

The Big Sioux River even rose two feet because of the rain.  Despite all the new water, rivers and creeks around Sioux Falls are far from flood stage.

There are ten river gauges in South Dakota that are near flood stage, including the James River at Huron.  Because of its flat, windy path, the Jim not only floods easily, but stays high for months.

Other potential trouble spots include White and Cheyenne Rivers in western South Dakota.  Much of this comes from recent melting snow.  With more fresh powder in the Hills, this could extend for a few more days at the least.  Most others will see their local river levels subside within a couple days, as rain heads downstream and a quiet week awaits.
