Rapid City residents want legislators to move a proposed prison south of the city, not in their neighborhood.
Several Rapid City citizens testified Wednesday against
HB1271, a bill to authorize state bonding for a $6 million, minimum security prison. Residents said they recognize the need for the prison but object to the location. The proposed site is on the east edge of Rapid City. Opponents said it would be near a school, a bank and several other businesses. Several said a site south of town near a landfill made more sense.
The panel delayed a decision on the bill until Thursday.
