Rare Winter Blast Hits Deep South

January 17, 2013, 5:21 PM by Ben Cathey

Rare Winter Blast Hits Deep South

We've seen a few January thaws this month but most are just brief enough to tease us. Still, the warmth and sun have provided the opportunity to get outside.

While we await the brutal cold, our neighbors in the Deep South are getting a taste of Old Man Winter.

Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama went from damaging thunderstorm winds and power outages to snow and ice within days.

And Memphis found itself right in the middle of the mess. On Thursday morning, drivers in the River City were forced to battle icy roads. And now, the state's DOT has even added potato juice to its road brine.

After heavy rains and ice doused eastern Tennessee, floodwaters are adding to worries in Chattanooga as more snow is on the way.

A few inches fell on Jackson, Mississippi and more is headed for Atlanta. Many flights have already been delayed across the southeast. The northern Alabama city of Huntsville actually dealt with rare thundersnow Thursday afternoon.

As for KELOLAND, cold temperatures are headed our way, but there is no heavy snow in the immediate forecast.
