A Rapid City police officer who shot and killed a suspect has been cleared of any wrongdoing.
State Attorney General Marty Jackley says a probe by the Division of Criminal Investigation concluded that Officer Jerrell Lewellen was justified in shooting 35-year-old Harold Murphy on June 4.
Authorities concluded that Lewellen shot Murphy four times as Murphy fired a gun while scuffling with another officer. Murphy died at the scene. The incident began as a traffic stop.
The investigation report says Murphy had illegal drugs in his system and in his possession, along with $7,410 in cash. He had previous convictions for assault, weapon and drunken driving crimes, and an active warrant for assault and driving with a revoked license.
