RAPID CITY, SD -
Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender says a $500,000 federal grant will allow his department to hire four officers to combat a growing crime problem in the western South Dakota city.
Allender says the grant will delay the expense to taxpayers. The Department of Justice grant will cover the salaries and benefits of four officers for the next three years.
The department is seeking applicants for the four new positions.
Police Department spokeswoman Tarah Heupel says the department got a similar grant two years ago that allowed the hiring of four officers the city's Street Crimes Unit.
The department says it received the grants based on funding needs, crime rates and policing plans.
