Rapid City Number One For Outdoor Life

June 1, 2010, 5:55 PM by Austin Hoffman

Rapid City Number One For Outdoor Life
RAPID CITY, SD - Some outdoor enthusiasts consider the Rapid City area one of the best places in the country. Now a national magazine agrees.

The latest edition of Outdoor Life magazine ranks which towns across the county are the best for people who love the outdoors. And out of 200 towns, Rapid City, South Dakota, got the top spot

The Black Hills have always attracted people looking for an outdoor adventure. And now Outdoor Life magazine says the region truly tops the list, naming Rapid City the best town in America for hunters and fishermen. Chad Tussing is with the Game Fish and Parks and says he understands why Rapid City is number one.

"Out here, we do have access to some tremendous upland bird hunting with prairie grouse, prairie chicken sharp-tail grouse, the hills themselves with elk, deer, there's some other big game we've got. Not to mention all the trout streams and lakes," Tussing said.

Tussing also says if you're looking for a peaceful trail to walk or bike, Rapid City has those too.

"Between biking on the Mickelson Trail and the Centennial Trail and all the other trails around, there's something to do every day and never repeat your own footsteps," Tussing said.

Not only did Outdoor Lifegive Rapid City that number one raking, but there’s more behind that number than the streams and wildlife.

"The housing market compared to a lot of other places around the country is very good.  The amenities, the cost of living are very affordable," Tussing said.

Tussing says Rapid City also has businesses where you can get any equipment you might need for those outdoor adventures. And if you don't want to buy all that on your own, plenty of guides are just a phone call away.

Rapid City wasn't the only South Dakota city to make this list. Pierre came in at number ten and Sioux Falls ranked nineteen.
